Time to go back to school! As we are all kicking off a new semester in September, I would like to invite you to my Piano Solo Recital on Friday, Sept. 28 at Newman Recital Hall, USC.
I will start my recital program with a Haydn sonata followed with two selections from the Harmonies Poetiques et Religieues by F. Liszt. The second half of the program will start with two Chopin Nocturnes and finish with a set of three pieces by M. Ravel, called Gaspard de la Nuit (Gaspard of the night). The titles of the three pieces are from a book of poetry by Aloysius Bertrand: Ondine, Le Gibet, and Scarbo. The book entails a fantasy, that Bertrand tells of encountering a mysterious indigent who calls himself Gaspard de la Nuit and who leaves behind the manuscript of the book to inquire upon man. Bertrand is told that the man was the devil in disguise and returned to hell... The opening piece, Ondine, is one of the new heights of Ravel's impressionistic writings with decorative figurations and complexity. It depicts the seductive song of the water spirit. The second piece, Le Gibet, describes the grisly image of a corpse hanging for public display. A haunting bell strickes from the beginning to the end of the piece. Scarbo is the name of a dwarf who haunts the house of the poet. Ravel purposely set to write Scarbo one of the greatest virtuoso challenges of the keyboard repertoire. Its reputation among pianists as a work that brings together supreme challenges of technique, control, and musicality is well deserved....The concert starts at 8pm, admission free.
