Dr. FangFang Shi Inouye is an award-winning concert pianist, collaborative artist, educator, lecturer, author, and composer of educational piano literature. Her multifaceted career combines performance, scholarship, pedagogy, and artistic outreach, reflecting her lifelong dedication to sharing the beauty and depth of classical music. Dr. Shi Inouye’s performances have taken her throughout the United States and abroad. Her live performances have been broadcast on Southern California’s classical radio station KUSC, and in 2015 she made her New York debut at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall. She is the recipient of numerous honors, including the Ethnic Music Award from the MPE Loeb Competition, Fourth Prize in the Los Angeles International Liszt Competition, and First Prize in the USC Thornton School of Music Concerto Competition, through which she appeared as soloist with the USC Thornton Symphony Orchestra under Maestro Carl St. Clair. Dr. Shi Inouye earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance from the USC Thornton School of Music, where she studied with renowned pianist Norman Krieger. Her research paper, “Realizing Goals in Memorization,” was published by the International Society for Music Education (ISME), and she was invited to present her research at the ISME International Conference in Beijing, China. In addition to her solo career, Dr. Shi Inouye is an active collaborative artist, performing chamber music with cellists and vocalists. She has also dedicated over three decades to music education and has served as faculty at Cerritos College, Irvine Valley College, California State University, Dominguez Hills, and currently Long Beach City College. Her students have received recognition in major competitions and have continued their musical studies at institutions including the USC Thornton School of Music, California State University, Fullerton, University of California, Santa Barbara, and California State University, Long Beach. In 2024, Dr. Shi Inouye published her original four-volume pedagogical series, 216 Sight Reading Practices, contributing new resources to piano education. Through performance, teaching, research, and creative work, she continues to inspire musicians and audiences by revealing the artistic, historical, and human dimensions of classical music.
